The load is the whole story
A standard residential deck is designed for 40 pounds per square foot of live load. A filled spa with occupants routinely lands around 100 pounds per square foot over its footprint. That is not a margin you can absorb.
We design the spa area as its own structural zone: joists at tighter spacing, a dedicated beam directly under the tub, and footings sized and placed for that concentrated load rather than spread across the deck’s general grid.
Access and service
A spa needs access to its equipment bay. We build a removable decking section or a hinged hatch over the service side, because the alternative is cutting your deck apart in five years when the pump fails.
Placement
Close to a door so the walk in February is short, out of the prevailing wind, and where the noise of the pump is not under a bedroom window. Sunk flush into the deck looks best and costs more, because the frame has to step down around it and drainage under the tub has to be handled.
Above ground pool surrounds
Freestanding, always
The pool wall carries the water. It is not a structural member and nothing may bear on it. We build the surround as an independent deck on its own footings and scribe the decking close to the pool with a small gap, so it reads as one piece while being structurally separate.
Height and the gate
The deck sits at or just below the top rail. Where the deck gives access to the pool, the barrier and gate requirements apply to that opening, and the gate hardware has to be self closing and self latching to the local specification.
Partial or full
A partial surround along one side is dramatically cheaper and covers most of what people actually use, which is somewhere to put towels and get in and out. A full wraparound looks better and costs two to three times as much.
Decking material around water
Capped PVC
The best answer around a pool. Fully waterproof through the board, not just at the cap, so trapped water cannot cause swelling. Runs cooler than wood flour composite. Unaffected by chlorine and salt. It is the most expensive decking we fit and around a pool it is the one we recommend first.
Mineral based composite
Deckorators and similar mineral core products do not absorb water and run cool. A strong second choice and usually less expensive than PVC.
Wood
It works and it looks good, and it will need more maintenance here than anywhere else on the property. Splash out, UV and chlorine together are harder on a finish than ordinary weather. If you want wood around a pool, budget for sealing on the short end of the cycle.
Colour and heat
Dark boards around a pool in Ohio July are a mistake people make once. Lighter greys and tans run meaningfully cooler underfoot. We will tell you which way your pool deck faces before you choose.
Drainage and grading
Water leaves the pool constantly, and it has to go somewhere that is not into your footings or against the house. We grade the ground under and around the deck to move it away, and on a raised pool deck we look at whether an under deck system makes sense to catch and pipe it.

How much weight does a hot tub deck need to hold?
Far more than a normal deck. A filled six person spa with people in it commonly works out around 100 pounds per square foot, against the 40 pounds per square foot a standard residential deck is designed for. That means tighter joist spacing, a dedicated beam line under the tub and its own footings. Setting a spa on a normal deck frame is one of the more dangerous shortcuts in this trade.
What decking is best around a pool?
Something slip resistant that does not cook in the sun. Capped PVC is the strongest option because it is fully waterproof, runs cooler than standard composite and handles chlorinated water without staining. Mineral based composite is a close second. Dark boards of any material on a south facing pool deck will be too hot to walk on barefoot in July, which rather defeats the purpose.
Can a deck be attached to my above ground pool?
The deck must never bear on the pool wall. Above ground pool walls carry the water, not a structure. We build the surround as a freestanding deck on its own footings, scribed close to the pool so it looks integrated, with a small expansion gap so the pool can move independently.
Do pool decks need fencing and gates?
Pool barrier requirements are set locally and they apply to the whole enclosure, not just the deck. Self closing and self latching gates, latch height, and gaps under the barrier are all specified. We design the deck around the barrier rules for your jurisdiction and flag anything on the existing enclosure that will not pass.
Will chlorine or salt damage the deck?
Splash out is hard on wood, which will grey and degrade faster around a pool than anywhere else on a property. It is hard on unprotected fasteners too. Salt systems are harsher again. We use stainless or heavily coated hardware around pools and normally recommend PVC or capped composite decking rather than wood.
Can you build a deck around an in ground pool?
Yes, though the detail at the coping is where it is won or lost. The deck cannot load the pool shell, water has to drain away from the structure rather than under it, and the transition from coping to decking needs to be flush enough to be safe barefoot. It is a more exacting build than an ordinary deck and we price it accordingly.
